Terms of use

Elided is a free daily word puzzle with no accounts. These terms are the agreement between you and the person who runs it. By playing, or by using this site in any other way, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Who runs Elided

Elided is made and run by AJ Perez, an individual in Washington State, in the United States, and not by a company. Where these terms say the owner, they mean AJ Perez.

Where these terms apply

They cover every way of playing: in a browser at elided.app, installed to a phone's home screen or a computer with Install Elided, and inside another site that shows the game in a frame, such as a games directory. Where a site frames the game, that site's own terms cover the site, and these cover the game inside it.

Playing

Elided is free. You may play it, on as many devices as you like, for your own personal, non-commercial enjoyment. That permission is yours alone, cannot be passed to anyone else, and lasts for as long as you follow these terms.

There is no account. Your record — the days you have played, their stars, your streak — is kept only in your browser's storage, on the device you played on. It does not follow you to another device or browser, clearing your browser's site data deletes it, and nothing on the owner's side can restore it. The privacy notice lists exactly what is kept.

Elided is made for a general audience. If you are under 18, please read these terms with a parent or guardian, and play with their permission.

Sharing

Share as much as you like. You are welcome to post your results, send the invite to a friend, link to any page here, and talk about the puzzles, answers included — though other players will thank you for a spoiler warning.

What is not allowed

You agree not to:

• use bots, scrapers, scripts or any other automated means to play the game, to request puzzles from the site's puzzle service, or to collect puzzles or answers in bulk. Assistive technology, such as a screen reader, is of course welcome;
• copy, republish or sell the puzzles as a collection, or build another game or service from them;
• copy the game itself — its design, its look, its code or its text — to make a copy or a close imitation of it;
• get around the limits the site places on how often it can be asked for things, or any other part of its security, or try to reach anything that is not published;
• disrupt or overload the site, or interfere with anyone else's play;
• show the game in a frame on another site, except on the sites the owner has allowed;
• use the name Elided, or anything that looks like it, in a way that suggests the owner made, endorses or is connected with something the owner is not;
• use the site or anything on it to train or fine-tune a machine-learning model;
• use the site for anything unlawful.

Search engines and AI assistants are welcome to read these pages, to index them, and to quote and link to them in their answers. The site's robots.txt says the same thing in the form those services read, and training a model is the one use that file and these terms both withhold.

What belongs to whom

Elided™ is a trademark of AJ Perez. The game — its design and look, its puzzles as the site deals them, its code and its text — is © AJ Perez, all rights reserved, except for the permissions these terms give you.

Some parts belong to others and stay under their own licences: the typefaces, the software libraries the site is built with, the word lists the game's dictionary is built from, whose makers and licences are in the word lists' notices, and the directory badges at the foot of each page, which belong to the directories they name. The words themselves belong to no one; what is the owner's is the game made from them.

Suggestions

Ideas, bug reports and suggestions are always welcome. If you send one, the owner may use it freely — to change the game, for instance — without owing you anything for it.

Other sites

This site links to others: the directories that list the game, and the games in its guide to games like Wordle. The owner does not run them and is not responsible for what they contain or how they treat you. Their own terms apply there.

Changes, and the game ending

Elided is a small project run by one person. The owner may change the game, its rules or its puzzles, add or remove features, or pause or end it, at any time and without notice. Nothing here promises that any feature, any day's puzzle or any record will stay available.

No warranty

Elided is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, of fitness for a particular purpose, or of non-infringement. The owner does not promise that the site will always be available, that it will be free of errors, or that any fault will be fixed.

Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the owner is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost progress or lost profits, arising from your use of the site or from being unable to use it, even if told that such a loss was possible. The owner's total liability for any claim about the site is limited to US$50.

Your rights where you live

Some places do not allow a warranty to be excluded or liability to be limited as above. Where that is so, those parts apply only as far as the law there permits. Nothing in these terms limits a liability that cannot lawfully be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing takes away a right that the consumer law where you live gives you and does not let you give up.

Ending access

You can stop using Elided whenever you like; clearing your browser's site data removes everything it kept on your device. If someone breaks these terms, the owner may block or limit their access to the site, without notice.

Law and disputes

If something goes wrong, please write first: most things can be sorted out by email. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, in the United States, without regard to its rules on conflicts of law. Any dispute about them or about the site is to be decided by the state or federal courts located in Washington, and you and the owner both agree to those courts' jurisdiction. If you live outside the United States, you keep any right your own country's law gives you to bring a claim in its courts.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, this page changes, and the date at the top changes with it. A change applies from the day it is posted, and playing after that means you accept it. A change never reaches back to a dispute already under way.

Everything else

These terms and the privacy notice are the whole agreement between you and the owner about the site. If a court finds any part of them unenforceable, that part is enforced as far as it can be, and the rest still stands. If the owner does not enforce a term straight away, that is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else; the owner may transfer them to anyone who takes over running Elided.
