In a paragraph

87 words

Elided is a set of daily word puzzles sharing one mechanic: spell words from a string of sixteen letters, reading left to right and skipping letters as you go. In Longest, each round hides one word longer than any other you could spell there, and you have four guesses to find it; wrong guesses mark the tiles you used as in or out of the answer, so each guess gets you closer. In Hunt, a word search, you find as many words as the sixteen letters hold.

In full

143 words

Elided is a set of daily word puzzles, all built on the same mechanic: tap letters left to right to spell a word. They don't need to be adjacent, but order matters. Where the letters sit in two rows, reading runs straight on from the end of the first row into the second. In Longest, three rounds of sixteen letters each hide one word longer than any other you could spell there, and you have four guesses to find it. Wrong guesses mark the tiles you used as in or out of the answer, so each guess gets you closer, and fewer guesses earn more stars. In Hunt, a word search, you find as many words as the sixteen letters hold, and nothing ends a hunt but you. Everyone gets the same puzzles each day, and past days stay playable in the archive.

Where Elided came from

I've played daily word puzzles for years. One day, partway through a word search, I started noticing how many words were tucked inside a single line of letters, hiding in plain sight.

Most word games I knew scrambled their letters, or had you join tiles that touch. Very few asked you to find a word whose letters were already there, in order. The more I dug into that idea, the more it gave back. I tried many iterations of the game before settling on a few puzzle styles. I'm grateful to have family members who also play daily word puzzles, and who gave me a lot of feedback along the way. Many of them are now daily players too!

Watching them play is what made me want to turn it into a short daily puzzle we could all enjoy together. That's how Elided began, and I hope it finds a place in your day too.
